"Mobility in Stability" Program

“Mobility in Stability” was the theme of a lecture given by Geeta Iyengar at the annual Iyengar Yoga convention in France

"The present situation is such that everyone desires quick and instant results. Suffering and hard work are rejected. Inert nature refuses effort. The pleasure-seeking mind rejects suffering."

However, “to attain 'Brahmi-sthiti', to perceive the 'supreme' is as hard as eating a grain of iron. It is not an easy process. Yoga is not for those who are lazy, unenthusiastic, conceited, brutalized by worldly pleasures. One must fight on all fronts to reach the goal. It is a continuity of mutations in order to obtain transformation.”

“(…) we must proceed with mobility towards stability with a stable practice. The origin of stability lies in mobility. No one can achieve stability directly except by dealing with mobility. Mobility is dynamic, while stability without mobility will lead to stagnation. (…) mobility is hidden within stability.”

“The word for stability in Sanskrit is sthiratā or sthairya. The word sthiratā expresses different aspects of stability such as constancy, firmness, establishment, and others. The antonym of stability is mobility. Mobility indicates instability, but in this context it means movement, or rather, progressive movement. It generally indicates movement, action, and function. Both mobility and stability are essential for progress. (…)

Mobility is kinetic energy while stability is static energy. In order to practice yoga, one first needs preranã – self-inspiration in order to act. Mobility is the stimulus that inspires one to proceed, while stability is the static energy that maintains self-balance or the inner strength to have firmness. A yoga practitioner needs both qualities – mobility and stability, the inspiration to proceed and the adherence to stabilize oneself
